Whatever It Takes

Solutions Discovered during my 35 years of living with MS

How can you help a person in a wheelchair learn to:

  • Pick up things from the floor while sitting in a wheelchair?
  • Access a computer when their fine motor skills are significantly impaired?
  • Dress independently when unable to move their legs or stand?
  • Fill a cup of water when unable to reach the faucet handles?
  • Open and close a door while using a wheelchair?

About this book

Hi, I’m so glad you made your way here. My name is Barbara and I wrote this book at the urging of a Rehabilitation Nurse who was working in my home.

She saw some of the strategies that I used to help me maximize my independence and a couple of things I had invented to make my life easier!

As I say in the forward of my book. I had fun coming up with the book title and chapter headings but then it stopped being fun. I do have a hard time writing but I love talking and showing pictures. I also love the idea of being able to help others with disabilities. So, here it is.

The first chapter of my book has to do with opening and closing doors. It is not always easy when you are sitting in a wheelchair! The second chapter includes strategies for activities of daily living. It includes a dressing aid which currently has a Patent Pending! I love technology and I have included some information about how I used voice dictation and voice control to write this e-book.

Other chapters include solutions for exercising, eating, picking things up, staying safe, getting a good night’s sleep and managing my health.

The book was first published last year and I now have some reviews. They include reviews from an Occupational Therapist, a Rehabilitation Nurse, a Geriatric Care Manager and a Caregiver. You can either scroll down or click on the Reviews link at the top of this page.

If you are ready to order the book or want to see where it is available, you can click on Ordering at the top. If you go to Apple Books or Google play books, you can download a free sample. Because of the videos, the book is best viewed on an iPad, a tablet or a computer. You could look at it on a smart phone if you have really, really good eyesight. If you would like to check out the book from your local Library through Overdrive Media, you can call them and ask them to order it.

New Solutions – WIT Worthy

I consider a solution to be WIT Worthy if I would have included it in my book. Since I’m finished with the book, new solutions will be posted on Instagram and listed here on my website.

Reviews

As an occupational therapist who has worked in people’s home over the last 7 years, I found this book not only entertaining but also immensely helpful! Barbara’s attitude, quick VIDEOS, simple and creative solutions and practical play-by-plays of how she maximizes the quality and participation in her life (that also happens to include living with MS). I think this is a great tool for especially OTs in home health, students, new grads and even is a wonderful teach tool because of how many real life scenarios Barbara shares (that are often addressed by especially home health OTs). I learned and laughed and am so grateful I discovered this book!

This is an informative book that everyone must read, especially occupational therapists! In this wonderful resource, Barbara shares how she overcomes many of the barriers that she faces as she lives with Multiple Sclerosis by using creative solutions to maximize her independence. She shares how she uses voice controls, commercially available adaptive devices, a homemade sandwich gripper, and even zip ties to adapt to the demands of everyday life and carry out her activities of daily living. Barbara’s unique perspective, fun sense of humor, determination, and positive attitude are evident throughout the book. This valuable resource includes videos, photographs, and detailed descriptions of Barbara’s experiences using home modifications. I have no doubt that this book will inspire students and practicing therapists to think creatively so that they can help their clients who have similar struggles.

Thanks so much for your time documenting and sharing your tips & tricks! I’m certain this work will help many other with a variety of disabilities & those that work with them to enhance function as well. Your text is easy to navigate with videos & images. Further it has a fun & lighthearted nature making it enjoyable to read alongside being practical. I plan to use this as a real world example of the rehabilitative vs biomechanical model. Health care professionals need people like you to share wisdom for us to do our best work!
With gratitude,

Barbara’s ingenuity for making assistive devices out of normal, everyday objects is nothing I have ever seen in my 15 years in rehabilitation nursing. This will be vital for individuals and families that don’t have the means to buy expensive products. I am confident that after reading this book, many people will have a more independent life.

What a find! I am a retired Geriatric Care Manager. My job was to find solutions to help my clients live as independently as possible and for them to have the best quality of life that they choose to have. I wish that I had known about this book earlier. It is full of resources I never could have imagined, solutions created by someone living with challenges.

Lue T., LMSW Geriatric Care Manager

I have worked for Barbara for five years. When she thought about writing this book I encouraged her because I had worked for people who could really have benefited from Barbara‘s solutions. I had no idea that I would be using one of Barbara‘s ideas to help my own mother and father when my father was on hospice. When I arrived home, my mother was searching for material and thinking of sewing something to make my father more comfortable. In two minutes, I talked my niece out of one of her socks and with some scissors, I made an arm sleeve that made my dad much more comfortable and relieved my mothers stress. Everyone who works for Barbara has been helping taking pictures and recording video to help this book! I took the best picture of Winston and it made the back cover!! I was the model in the Dressing Aid video! Barbara’s solutions do help her be Independent and Barbara’s solutions also help us help her.

I told you about my AirPods, (can be found on page 45), because I had to pick them up if I dropped them. I needed a more secure and quicker way to get my AirPods into my ear. What about cork? A cork stopper for a wine bottle came to mind.

I have considered my cork AirPod aid to be a total success!

I had lots of leftover cork stoppers and I wondered if I could use cork to help me find a solution for another challenge. I needed a quick and easy way to get a charging cord into my phone.

So, we took another two corks and put a slit in one side. We made a small hole in the top and then tucked in the cord. We pulled the cord tight with the connection end fitting into the small hole so that it would be secure. The cork surrounded by the blue foam made a good handle and good support.

Success! I love cork!

The strap on the left was working! Why change it? Well, there might always be something better!
Here’s a good example… look at these cool flat TheraBands!

Therapy Flat Resistance Bands Set, Latex Free Flat
Elastic Exercise Stretch Bands $9.99

These TheraBands are also called resistance bands cost $9.99. They are 5 feet long and you get three of them! I cut one of them in half for my right define and in one for my left hand. I consider this an excellent solution that cost under $4.00 ($2.00 for each hand)! I gave one of them to a friend for her exercising and I have one left!

This kind of solution makes me happy! It’s easier to use, more effective and cheaper!
